There are various government programs, private, and non-profit organizations that offer programs and services for individuals with disabilities or offer funding for mobility equipment. We’ve compiled a number of resources for you here.

Canada Funding Resources

Health Insurance

If you have private health insurance you may have coverage for mobility aids. Some insurance companies can even direct bill, while others require a receipt for reimbursement. Coverage differs based on your provider and plan. Contact your health insurance provider for more information.

Veterans Affairs Canada

If you have a diagnosed medical condition or disability and are able to show that it is related to your service, you may be able to quality for disability benefits.

Tax Programs and Rebates

Income Tax

Certain eligible medical expenses can be claimed on your income tax such as bathroom aids, crutches, disposable briefs, platform or stair lifts, vehicle lifts, scooters, walking aids, and wheelchairs.

Federal Excise Gasoline Tax Refund Program

“If you have a permanent mobility impairment and cannot safely use public transportation, you can ask for a refund of part of the federal excise tax on the gasoline you buy. A qualified medical practitioner must certify the impairment.”

GST Specially Equipped Motor Vehicle Rebate

“If you paid GST/HST on the purchase of a qualifying motor vehicle, a modification service performed on your motor vehicle, the importation of a qualifying motor vehicle, or the bringing in of a qualifying motor vehicle into a participating province from a non-participating province” you may be eligible to receive a rebate.

Easter Seals

“Easter Seals is Canada’s largest local provider of programs, services, and issues-leadership and development for the disability community.” Easter Seals offers different programs and financial services depending on the province you live in. Funding for equipment includes: platform lifts, stairlifts, mobility scooters and powerchairs, lift chairs, and ramps.

Muscular Dystrophy Canada

“Muscular Dystrophy Canada provides Programs and Services, Research and Advocacy to support people affected by neuromuscular disorders.” Their Equipment Program provides funding for platform lifts, stairlifts, ramps, bathroom aids, powered mobility aids, wheelchairs, walkers and rollators, and batteries.

March of Dimes Canada

“March of Dimes Canada is a leading national charity committed to championing equity, empowering ability, and creating real change that will help the more than six million people living with disabilities across the country unlock the richness of their lives.” They provide financial aid for accessible modifications including home and vehicles as well as powered and non-powered mobility devices.

MS Canada

The MS Canada “Quality of Life Equipment Grants provide financial assistance to those requiring support with the purchase of mobility equipment and safety devices.” You can receive up to $1000/year towards bathroom aids, equipment repairs, mobility aids, transferring aids, and vehicle modifications.

Back to Ag

“The Back to Ag Program is a funding project focused on supporting the cost of adaptive technology for farmers that have experienced a traumatic injury. The Back to Ag Program is funded by FCC and delivered in partnership with CASA and the Rick Hanson Foundation.” Grants are available up to $10,000 and help pay for ramps, platform lifts, wheelchairs, and hand controls.

National Organization for Vehicle Accessibility (NOVA)

NOVA’s Ralph Braun Grant Program “is directed to individuals with disabilities who have secured the majority of the money needed to fund vehicle modification products and just need some additional help to reach their goal. The Ralph Braun Grant Program is designed to bridge the funding gap that prevents people in need of mobility products from achieving their mobility goals.” You can apply for up to $5000 that can be used towards the purchase of essential mobility equipment such as vehicle conversion, wheelchair/scooter lifts, and driving aids.

Manufacture Rebate Programs for WAVs

You may be eligible to receive money via manufacturer rebates towards mobility aids or adaptive driving equipment depending on your vehicle. Often certain conditions do have to be met to qualify and a doctor’s note or government issued certificate may be required.

Disability Related Employment Supports (DRES)

“Disability Related Employment Supports (DRES) funding is available to pay for supports that help Albertans overcome barriers to education or employment caused by a disability.” You may be eligible for up to $40,000 towards vehicle modifications to get to and from employment under the Workplace Supports section.

Assured Income for the Severely Handicapped (AISH)

Among other services, AISH will cover equipment maintenance for wheelchairs and mobility scooters under health-related personal benefits. If you are on AISH, contact your case worker or give us a call to submit a quote.

Residential Access Modification Program (RAMP)

RAMP is for “low income Albertans with mobility challenges [who] can apply for grants to modify their home” so that they “enable you to enter and move within your own living space.” You may be eligible for up to $7,500/year and up to $15,000 over a 10 year period for home modifications including: platform or stair lifts, threshold ramps, grab bars or hand rails.

Worker's Compensation Board (WCB)

Workers’ Compensation Board – Alberta (WCB). If you are or have been severely injured at work, the WCB may pay for wheelchair accessible vehicles/modifications, wheelchairs, and powered mobility aids.

Children's Ability Fund

“The Children’s Ability Fund provides funding for specialized equipment to enhance the independence of children and young adults with disabilities throughout Alberta.” Funding categories include mobility devices and vehicle adaptation.

Alberta School Employee Benefit Plan (ASEBP)

If you are a teacher, you may be eligible for up to $4000 every four years towards the purchase, repair, or rental of a wheelchair or scooter. Note, you must be approved by ASEBP prior to the purchase.

Variety Children's Charity

This BC charity provides support to children with disabilities and their families. They offer child equipment grants that cover manual and powered wheelchairs, standing walkers, ramps, and van conversions. You can receive up to $4000 per year, except for van conversions which is up to $7500.
