Tax Programs and Rebates
Certain eligible medical expenses can be claimed on your income tax such as bathroom aids, crutches, disposable briefs, platform or stair lifts, vehicle lifts, scooters, walking aids, and wheelchairs.

Federal Excise Gasoline Tax Refund Program
“If you have a permanent mobility impairment and cannot safely use public transportation, you can ask for a refund of part of the federal excise tax on the gasoline you buy. A qualified medical practitioner must certify the impairment.”

GST Specially Equipped Motor Vehicle Rebate
“If you paid GST/HST on the purchase of a qualifying motor vehicle, a modification service performed on your motor vehicle, the importation of a qualifying motor vehicle, or the bringing in of a qualifying motor vehicle into a participating province from a non-participating province” you may be eligible to receive a rebate.

“The Children’s Ability Fund provides funding for specialized equipment to enhance the independence of children and young adults with disabilities throughout Alberta.” Funding categories include mobility devices and vehicle adaptation.

Alberta School Employee Benefit Plan (ASEBP)
If you are a teacher, you may be eligible for up to $4000 every four years towards the purchase, repair, or rental of a wheelchair or scooter. Note, you must be approved by ASEBP prior to the purchase.
